Hair Transplant for Women
Many women encounter hair loss in their lives at a particular stage. Hair Loss can occur due to several reasons. Unfortunately, women are more emotional and usually have more psychological concerns than men. Many have hormonal problems, some lose it due to stress, and some cannot grow long hair due to genetics. And due to this, these women with less hair or baldness face criticism because the common social perception expects women to have long and perfect hair throughout their lives.
So baldness at any stage of life is not ideal for women. Hair loss directly affects a person's social life and psychology, but it can be treated in various ways. In contrast, hair transplantation is a solution for permanent hair loss cases. Hair transplantation is usually associated with men wanting a solution for male-pattern baldness. Still, the many women looking for treatment in the past decade have been on the rise.
Innovations in modern hair transplantation techniques have allowed effective hair restoration of female alopecia, which may not be possible to treat with older methods. So, are you a woman? If you are facing baldness or hair loss, we bring some things you must know before going for a surgical hair transplant to cure your baldness.
The Difference Between Men Hair Transplants and Women's Hair Transplants
Although hair restoration treatment is an excellent choice for nearly 90 per cent of balding men, women think the same results will happen with them in the hair transplant technique. But this is not the same case.
Most women have the type of baldness that makes them viable candidates. However, most women experience cumulative hair loss, thin hair in all areas of the scalp, including the sides and back; these are the places that serve as donor sites in males. From these locations, hair is transferred to other parts of the head for hair transplant.
In males, donor sites are considered secure areas, which means that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that shrinks follicles elsewhere on the head will not affect the hair and follicles in those areas. This is the case for those with androgenetic alopecia, also called baldness in the male pattern.
However, those donor areas are generally unstable in female pattern baldness. Like other parts of the head, these areas are thinning. Usually, the donor areas in most women are infected by follicle-killing DHT. This means that if you detach hair and follicles from these donor areas and transplant them into other recipient areas, they'll fall out, for sure, in the coming future. Any doctor who will still try to transplant hair from an unhealthy donor site is possibly dishonest and possibly wants to take advantage of the patient's ignorance and will make money.
Another difference is the frontal hairline. Unlike men, women with hair loss prefer to keep their hairline. They do not think about having a hair transplant to frame their face; instead, they are more concerned with volume loss from the top and back. But, hair transplants are not for increasing hair length; they are typically used to fill the bald or thin area. Women need to keep this fact in their minds when thinking about hair transplants.
Which Women are Fit for Hair Transplants ?
Women with this hair loss problem will get a great benefit and the best result:
- A divergent hair loss pattern. That resembles a male pattern of hair loss, e.g., hair thinning on the upper edge of the scalp.
- Scarring alopecia, i.e., baldness caused by trauma, e.g., burns and stretch marks due to an accident.
- Traction alopecia, i.e., hair loss affected by strictly pulling hair and tight s ll hair out of the scalp or other body areas. The patient will first receive psychological treatment here. And after that, the hair plant surgeon will graft hair follicles to the patient's scalp.
- Which Method Is Used for Women's Hair Transplant?
The type of treatment will rely solely on your personal needs. The doctor will scrutinise you before determining which method will be best for you. There are two hair transplant techniques used to promote hair regrowth, the FUE method and DHI.
FUE hair implantation is a cutting-edge technique used in hair transplant ops. It causes no scars or complications, as it is minimally invasive and does not need hair-bearing. On the other hand,
DHI hair transplantation is pretty similar to the FUE method. The doctor will make micro incisions and extract hair follicles using the same micromotor. For details, check our article on FUE and DHI hair transplant techniques.
- Do women need to shave the donor area for Hair Transplant?
This is a common question, and most women are worried about it. You don't need to shave to have a hair transplantation procedure. Some doctors may require this, but it is not mandatory. If your surgery is accomplished with a strip method, then only the hair in the strip will be trimmed so that the incision will cover that hair above and below. So there is no need to shave the recipient or donor area.
